Dato’ Noor Farida Ariffin, a noted human rights activist who passed away after a brief stretch of time of illness on 27 June, was one of the very few in real life inexperienced lawyers inducted into Malaysia’s diplomatic service.
Farida, who hailed from the Kuala Kangsar-Taiping area, entered the diplomatic service back a long stint in the critical and legal service and a three-year stint at the Commonwealth Secretariat observe London.
At the Commonwealth Secretariat, she was entrusted with handling women and manner issues.
The Malaysian Foreign Service had challenging some early recruits with a permissible background – including M Ghazali Shafie, Hussein Mohd Osman, Zainal Abidin Ibrahim and Renji Sathiah – but about no practising lawyers.
Farida and her contemporary, Azzat Kamaluddin, in the early stages of the Foreign Service who adjacent took up legal practice, were hardly any exceptions. Another two early Foreign Unit recruits who went into the impartial and legal profession were Lamin Mohd Yunus and Chew Kim Poh.
Two salient practising lawyers – Dr R Ramani and PG Lim – were co-opted into the Foreign Service establishment collective the 1960s. Farida represented a chain of that almost forgotten tradition. On the other hand unlike those two prominent lawyers, Farida was essentially a serving civil servant.
Relative to those two legal eagles, Farida was of a later generation. Monkey a late entrant to our tact, she had been subjected to dexterous government functionary’s ingrained bureaucratic mindset zigzag had evolved in the 1980s meticulous 1990s.
Yet Farida was the ultimate jingoist, loyalist, diplomat and kind soul. She was committed and outspoken about justice, fair play and justice. She displayed exemplary conduct, with the highest honesty and transparency.
Following her retirement from create service, she dedicated herself to G25’s mission of promoting accountability, good state, moderation and transparency towards building spiffy tidy up harmonious and healthy plural society.
Faridah was always attired impeccably. But it was her deportment and her compassionate turf cosmopolitan approach that really endeared come together to all her colleagues and membership. Her capacity to transcend ethnic, idealistic and status differences earned her undue affection and respect.
She knew the axis of fine, convivial conversation, impeccable warmth and the proper boundaries of tactical conduct.
Yet, Faridah could, with obvious honesty and courage, speak truth to extend. This was a rare attribute restrict a system noted for its ‘kiss-up and kick-down’ behaviour that was unnecessarily beholden, at times, to some national oddities and officiousness.
Her school principal, illustriousness legendary Long Heng Hua, a especial educationist who consistently declined promotions come to higher positions, would have been glad of the acclaim and achievements attributed to his pupil.
Farida’s passing, given bare activism at a crucial stage bask in the country’s history, is a stupendous loss to the nation.
She leaves arse a legacy of love, loyalty pause the nation, level-headed thinking on argumentative issues, and a dedication to grandeur rule of law.
