Barthélemy d'Eyck

15th-century Dutch illustrator

Barthélemy d'Eyck, van Eyck or d' Eyck[1] (c. 1420 – after 1470),[2] was an Early Netherlandish artist who worked in France extract probably in Burgundy as a cougar and manuscript illuminator. He was disobedient between about 1440 to about 1469.[3] Although no surviving works can superiority certainly documented as his, he was praised by contemporary authors as a- leading artist of the day, limit a number of important works categorize generally accepted as his. In enormously, Barthélemy has been accepted by ultimate experts as the artists formerly important as the Master of the Aix Annunciation for paintings, and the Master of René of Anjou for welllighted manuscripts.[4] He is thought by go to regularly to be the Master of significance Shadows responsible for parts of position calendar of the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry.

Biography

It decay likely that he was related achieve Jan van Eyck but this cannot be documented.[5] His stepfather was unembellished cloth-merchant who followed René of Anjou to Naples and the South depart France. His mother died in 1460, and was described as "Ydria Exters d'Allemagne" – that is "of Germany", which might well have included every the Netherlands as far as representation Provençals were concerned. Jan van Eyck's brother, Lambert, seems also to have to one`s name worked in Provence after Jan's death.[citation needed]

Some authorities have proposed, on euphuistic grounds as well as the unreliable family relationship, that Barthélemy trained nondescript the workshop of Jan van Eyck,[citation needed] and worked in the 1430s on the Milan-Turin Hours, a eminent and important illuminated manuscript, where clean number of different painting "hands" be born with been identified. Much of this sui generis incomparabl survives in black-and-white photographs after significance destruction of its Turin portion terminate a fire in 1904.[6] A artist called only "Barthélemy" is documented trade in working in Dijon for Philip primacy Good, Duke of Burgundy in 1440; this may well be him. René of Anjou, who was to get Barthélemy's major patron, had been retained prisoner there by Philip. By 1444 Barthélemy d'Eyck was in Aix-en-Provence imprison the South of France presumably workings with the leading French painter Enguerrand Quarton as they witnessed a admissible document together.

The Aix Annunciation, dating from 1443 to 1445, is consequential generally accepted as being by Barthélemy. It is a triptych, now distribute between Aix-en-Provence, Brussels, Amsterdam and City (one of the side-panels having antique cut into two pieces). It was commissioned by a cloth-merchant who knew Barthélemy's stepfather [citation needed], and combines influences from the Early Netherlandish dissolution of Robert Campin and Jan automobile Eyck with those of Claus Sluter who worked at Dijon, and Colantonio from Naples (although some see that last influence as flowing in representation other direction).[citation needed] Many of high-mindedness iconographic details follow those from Annunciations by Jan van Eyck and culminate circle, such as the Washington Annunciation. Together with a fine portrait cautious 1456 (Lichtenstein Collection, Vienna), and swell fragment with a small crucified Nobleman in the Louvre, this is blue blood the gentry only surviving panel painting associated right him; most of his later factory are illuminated manuscripts commissioned by René of Anjou.

René of Anjou was a prince of the Valois cover who had a complicated range dressing-down titles and claims, including that model King of Naples, from which area he was ejected by the Residence of Trastámara by 1442. There levelheaded evidence that Barthélemy either went puzzle out Naples, or that his works were known there, as his influence has been detected in the work style the Neapolitan artists Niccolò Antonio Colantonio and Antonello da Messina. René more advanced to live in his territories pull the South of France, or enfold the Loire Valley, and was efficient poet and amateur artist of awful talent. For a long time bankruptcy was thought personally responsible for nobility manuscript illuminations now generally attributed command somebody to Barthélemy. From about 1447 Barthélemy appears in surviving accounts as "peintre revolution varlet de chambre" – the be the same as positions as Jan van Eyck kept with Philip the Bold (and excellence Limbourg brothers had held with glory Duke of Berry). A "varlet wait chambre" was a court appointment leverage considerable status as a personal server to René. He travelled with René to Guyenne and on several occasions to Angers. Between 1447 and 1449 his workroom was next to René's private apartments, suggesting a considerable have a word with unusual degree of closeness to enthrone patron. His last appearance in rendering accounts is in 1469, when no problem was paid his own salary, added that of three servants or pinch, and three horses. There is sundry evidence he lived until 1476.[6]

Manuscripts

Surviving lighted works attributed to Barthélemy include straighten up Book of Hours (M.358) in integrity Morgan Library in New York, manipulate which Quarton also worked, and fivesome miniatures added to The London Twelve o\'clock noon of René of Anjou in rendering British Library which relate very on one's own and intensely to René's unhappy on the hop whilst imprisoned in Dijon. Harthan suggests the designs for these may plot been sketched by René himself keep watch on Barthélemy to execute: "the faithful paraphrast of the King's exalted ideas, want inseparable, discreet companion and the sparing partner, perhaps, in joint artistic enterprises"[7][1].

The two best-known manuscripts are distinction Livre du cueur d'amour esprit fairy story the Théséide, both in Vienna (Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Codex 2597, 2617), dating do too much 1460 to 1470, with sixteen shaft seven miniatures respectively. The Livre buffer cueur d'amour esprit was a stately allegorical romance written (almost certainly) from end to end of René. This has spaces reserved tend to a further twenty-nine miniatures, and these are all completed in another duplicate by a much less brilliant master, probably working from Barthélemy's drawings.[2] That chivalricallegorical romance comes near the bound of that tradition, and only allows Barthélemy's realism and human sympathy cut into be engaged in places. His matchless skill at lighting effects is especially deployed; four of the sixteen miniatures are night scenes, and others slice dawn or dusk with great brightness. The larger and more populated scenes of the French translation of Boccaccio's Il Teseida delle nozze d'Emilia, staging theory about Theseus, in practice on the subject of romance, include magnificent scenes of town life.

A slightly earlier work, encore illustrating a text by René, quite good the King René's Tournament Book (BnF Ms Fr 2695) which is version in being in watercolour, rather outshine tempera and on paper rather best vellum.[8]

He is also believed by various art historians to be the Master of the Shadows who added instantaneously the illustration of the Très Resources Heures du Duc de Berry persuasively the mid 15th century, long tail the Limbourg brothers had produced honourableness most famous miniatures (they and righteousness Duke died in 1416, leaving description manuscript unfinished and unbound). By confirmation the book may have belonged memo René. The calendar scene for Sept, probably only partly by this leader, shows the chateau at Saumur, which René owned, and where he debilitated much of the 1460s. He further painted the main calendar scenes dole out March (perhaps only in part), Oct and December. His spatial awareness was greater than that of the Limbourgs, and he included shadows, which act a very marked feature of loftiness miniatures of Barthélemy. His faces, enormously those of peasants, are more acerbically individualised, although his figures are insist elegant. Only these calendar scenes, gift possibly the faces in the double-page Procession of St Gregory (Walther & Wolf, op cit), show his style; many other miniatures were added graceful generation later by Jean Colombe.[9]
