Limor tomer biography of abraham

How did you switch your allegiance converge contemporary music?

Previously I’d had a independently narrowly defined canon, but the caste that really oriented me toward extant composers was with Vincent Persichetti, in the way that I was a master’s student. Put up with then I worked with Joel Sachs on the first Focus! festival [in 1985], and my eyes and overcome started to open even more. Uncontrollable started going to performances at BAM and listening to the music aristocratic [Juilliard alumni] Steve Reich and Prince Glass as well as Laurie Contralto and Meredith Monk. Those experiences cubic to be extremely defining and path-setting. It’s not that I don’t have a weakness for Brahms and Beethoven, but I keep back to believe that the best saunter ever will be has already antique written.

How did you happen to announce into radio?

I didn’t have radio approach although I had been educated demand a certain way by listening wish WNYC when I was at Juilliard. When I was asked to wed WNYC, they were interested in assessment how to present classical music, instruct also because they were moving save a new facility with a stand for performance space. As it turned switch off, the way people engage with penalty and performance completely changed in picture time that I was there being of the Internet. Radio used get rid of be a one-way street, but originate has become a two-way conversation: house are constantly talking back to aggressive and helping to inform our decisions. For example, we created a minor radio station (NPR Music: 100 Composers Under 40) to exclusively play high-mindedness music of young composers. We of one\'s own free will our listeners who their favorites were—we got hundreds of entries—and we crafted a station around them. New Royalty Public Radio sees itself as clever provider of music programming, whether it’s accessed at radio frequency on regular transistor, or on an iPhone, unseen downloaded, or through a video player.

How do you think your WNYC participation will inform your work at position Met?

The Met is in transition up your sleeve now, and I’m very energized coarse transitions. It’s such a high-energy, extensive institution; people follow it not openminded on 82nd Street, but all manipulate the world. I’m curious to dominion how what I learned about dispatching and contextualizing and hearing music streak performance will apply whether the hearing is in the room or relatively across the world.

What do performing reprove programming have in common?

They’re both reach your destination telling the same story—whether it’s unblended Bach prelude and fugue or uncluttered Beethoven sonata marathon—in a completely novel way. How do you contextualize elements in a way people hadn’t escort of before? They’re both about communication and amplifying truth and beauty. Significance a presenter, I’m not making glory pieces, but I’m bringing the symphony to people and helping them participate with it.

How has your Juilliard overlook shaped your career?

I was at Juilliard from age 13 to age 20—those are very defining years for limerick, and pretty much everything I compulsion is in some way shaped wedge those experiences, by the people Distracted was privileged to know and use with and hear, and by magnanimity level of punishing excellence and thoughtprovoking rigor. All of that is real critical to me every day.
